Diary

31 March 2001

Last day of the month, Spring has commenced although not weather wise and the cats are once again asleep in their favourite spots, very boring, my apologies!

30 March 2001

Ever woken up in the middle of the night convinced you can hear voices downstairs? Well for some it may not be a problem but as I live on my own I did not expect to hear voices coming from my lounge at 2.20am. I opened the bedroom door and there were lights flashing and yes definite voices, the T.V. was on. Now I know I pressed standby when I went to bed so I went to investigate.

Runcie has indeed put on weight! she was lying on the remote control and had inadvertently switched on the T.V. Thomas was sound alseep next to her, typical male, sleeps through everything. I leant across and switched the set off and in doing so touched Thomas, now he was dead to the world because his whole body actually left the sofa and his eyes were as big as saucers, he then shot me a look as if to say "just what do you think you are doing? Well I can assure you I didn't enjoy being woken from my sleep either, he will just have to blame Runcie.

29 March 2001

Spring on the way? Huh! Huge hailstones this afternoon so another day spent doing not a lot.

28 March 2001

Thomas had another mad half hour again today, I wonder if Spring is finally on its way? It is still raining but is a bit milder (just!) The others don't seem to think so though, even Georgie being the youngest is still preferring to stay indoors and sleep.

27 March 2001

Another wet, windy and cold day and again the cats spent it in their various spots and only showed themselves when it was time to eat.

26 March 2001

I spent the morning clearing out my filing cabinet and shredding old papers. Thomas spent time watching me intently and then decided that shredded paper made a good game. He hooked a piece out of the bag with his paw, picked it up in his mouth and ran off with. A little while later he came back for another piece. He did this quite a few times and I then found little bits of chewed and further shredded paper all over the house. There is a whole basket of cat toys in the hall and he has to play with paper, just like a child who is more interested in the wrapping paper and the box than the toy that came in it.

25 March 2001

Thomas had mad half hour this morning, this house is just not big enough for him to do that! He races up and down the stairs, over the lounger furniture and out throught he back door to the garden and then repeats the performance in reverse order. During this time he also tends to seek out Runcie for her to join in, invariably she doesn't want to, her days of madness have long since finished she is after all a very old lady and running around like a teenager is just something she has too much decorum for.

24 March 2001

Runcie is looking so much better, she is continuing to gain weight and her coat is maintaining its shine, that may have something to do with the beaten egg that she devours on a daily basis. Thomas is continuing to gain weight too, I think I may weigh him again and see what the lump has gained.

23 March 2001

Being out most of the day myself I can only assume the day was spent in a similar fashion to yesterday. They were pleased to see me when I got home but, only I think because the food in the bowls was getting a little low. The evening was again spent snoozing in various favourite spots, Runcie and Thomas on the sofa, Buster on the spare bed and Georgie on my bed.

22 March 2001

What a life, I am definitely coming back as a cat next time! Have food prepared for, have a sleep, have a stretch, more sleep, more food, more sleep,a brief wander outside to take in the air, more food, more sleep. And so it goes on I don't know how they cope.

21 March 2001

I understand the cats were as good as gold over the weekend, most of the food was eaten and as the weather was so appalling (so much for Spring) they tended to stay in. To try and tempt Georgie and Thomas with their food I am now sprinkling a little of the prescription diet on top of their tinned stuff, this seems to have the desired effect, they both ate the whole dish fully.

16 March 2001

I am going away for the weekend so there will be no entries until Tuesday 21 March. I have a friend coming round to feed the "little darlings" but I have decided that just for the weekend they will all eat the tinned food to make it easier for him. That should please Thomas and Georgie at least.

15 March 2001

Another lovely warm day so was able to leave the back door open for Thomas to wander in and out. He is quite happy to do this so long as I don't go out of his sight for too long. Haven't seem Patches for a while, wonder what he is up to?

14 March 2001

Spent today working in the garden, it has been warm and sunny, very Spring like. Thomas and Runcie spent most of the day with me, hopefully Thomas will be encouraged out more as the weather gets better.

13 March 2001

Runcie is making the most of her "new" very tasty food. I have never seen her quite so keen to eat. This is upsetting both Georgie and Thomas who feel they are missing out. I generally feed Thomas and Georgie first with their normal tinned food and then go into the dining room where Buster and Runce eat. They actually run after me at this point. Whereas Buster and Runcie sit and munch their way through their special food, Thomas and Georgie simply pick at theirs, and then sit by the dining room door (which is shut) and wait for the other two to finish to see what has been left.

12 March 2001

Off to the vet later with Runcie, she seems a little better in herself and a friend who hasn't seen her for a few weeks until last Wednesday told me she thought she looked a bit brighter, lets hope so.

Good news! Runcie has put on weight. Last time she was weighed which was a week and a half ago she was 2.9kg, today she is a massive 3.3kg, evidently the equivilent of me puting on approx. a stone in a week and a half. We still don't know what the actually problem is but, whilst I have no concerns about her the Vet said she would see her again in 6 months time. No charge, even better!

11 March 2001

On one of Thomas's rare excursions out he came face to face with Patches (the name I have given to the black & white from 27 January). What a commotion! No fighting but each was yelling blue murder. This will not encourage Thomas to go out more often. This afternoon did nothing but rain so once again a typical Sunday afternoon was spent by all.........asleep!

10 March 2001

Thomas is becoming a very clean cat and does actually venture out on his own occasionally. I only put the litter tray down at night now and it has not been used for nearly a week. I hope he stops altogether soon.

9 March 2001

Trying to feed two cats one type of food and the other two another type of food is not easy! Buster and Runcie eat in the dining room (very posh) however, Thomas and Georgie who have not had their menu changed have decided that 1) the kitchen is not good enough and 2) neither is the food. They want what Buster and Runcie have. Buster and Runcie however are VERY happy with their new diet and do not want to share. Talk about feeding time at the zoo. I have to stand guard and then remove the dishes if there is anything left and put them out of reach until the next feed. Very time consumimg.

8 March 2001

Georgie has found a new warm comfy spot which is claiming to be her own. I have a treatment bed which, when not in use is covered with a sheet to keep it clean. Under the sheet are 2 pillows and a variety of towels. This of course gives the bed a very comfortable feeling for a cat. The room is well heated at all times and Georgie has decided this is now hers! I haven't the heart to tell her that once the actual treatment room is ready the bed will be moved and there will be no access for her or the others.

7 March 2001

Runcie was in her element. A very sociable cat she just loves attention and today we had to separate visitors both of whom paid her LOTS of attention. She lapped it up. Thomas was much admired by the first visitor who had not been round before, he too was very pleased with himself and the impression that he had quite obviously made. Buster looked in but didn't stay and as per usual, Georgie was nowhere to be seen.

6 March 2001

A very quiet and subdued day all round. The cats were pleased to have me home all day not least because as I now have to feed Buster and Runcie with their special diet and therefore separately from Thomas and Georgie, instead of having 4 small meals per day, over the last 2 days they had to have as much as they wanted first thing in the morning and then.......they had to wait until I got home later that evening. I don't think they were impressed with that at all.

4 March 2001

I am out working for the next two full days so will have nothing to report until 6 March.

3 March 2001

3 inches of snow! For some strange reason none of them wanted to go out? Now is when I am reminded of Lester, he LOVED the snow. His first taste came in 1987 when the South of England had more than 3ft in one night, he was four! He was quite nervous to start with, this white cold stuff that covered his favourite hunting grounds. Then he found he could dive through it! This is what he did, he would run, leap and then plough THROUGH the snow becoming totally covered in the process. Lady on the other hand would not go out and refused to set foot outside the door for the two weeks the snow was laying.

2 March 2001

Very, very cold so once again nothing to report except that four cats found four warm spots around the house and.........slept!

1 March 2001

All is not well. The feeling at the Vet is that Runci has Cancer of some sort. Her new urine test was fine showing nothing untoward regarding the kidneys although the high level of Kerotnine could still be an early indication of renal failure. To test for Cancer will cost a great deal of money and the feeling at the Vet's is that if it is that it will be so far advanced that there will be nothing that can be done. So basically, I am not going to put Runcie (or me for that matter) through the tests. I am putting her onto the same low protein food as Buster and will take her back next week for a further weigh in.
