Diary

30 May 2001

Now quite obviously Patches has been coming in whilst I was away, he has been round on a regular basis since I have been back and attempted to come in. Each time I have chased him off but he must have been taking advantage of the fact the house had no human guard for most of the day. The last couple of days he has not been seen so much, maybe he is getting the message.

29 May 2001

Buster and Runcie loved having tinned food for a change but now can't wait to get stuck back in to the diet food, a change is as good as a rest I suppose, wonder how long it will last. I have been told that poor Runcie fell down the stairs whilst I was away. It seems she was fast asleep upstairs when the cat sitter arrived and suddenly realised food was being dished up, in her effort to get to the kitchen she lost her footing, she gained composure however and no damage was done.

28 May 2001

One of my "cat sitters" re-tuned by kitchen radio whilst I was away to Radio 2 instead of the local station. He tells me that the cats don't like the Sunday morning show with Michael Parkinson. When he arrived normally the cats were always in the kitchen waiting for food, however come the Sunday they were all elsewhere, this I notice happened yesterday also. Interesting to see what happens next week.

27 May 2001

Finally fitted the new cat flap this morning, took an hour and a half and I succeeded in bending the jigsaw blade at the same time, however, they have all used it and now Thomas can get through without his tummy touching the sides. It has a larger window being that much bigger and is also taller so all cats can now sit and look out into the garden without having to stoop, until now only Runcie was the right height for non stooping.

26 May 2001

I think they all missed me, Runcie came running downstairs as the key went in the door and demanded to be picked up. Thomas arose sleepily from the sofa and Buster in the same state from the sunny spot in the lounge. Georgie was also upstairs but waited for me to go to her!

17 May 2001

Off to Norfolk to visit parents tomorrow, Georgie thinks she is coming with me and attempts to get into the suitcase every time it is opened. Not a good idea, my parents have not only a very aggressive tortoiseshell cat but also, horror upon horrors a DOG! Will update again on return.

16 May 2001

Isn't it strange how cats seem to know when you are going away? Maybe it is the suitcase that does it? Anyway I am away for a week and there will be 2 "cat sitters" coming in to feed the "little darlings", this means that for a week, Buster and Runcie get to have ordinary tinned cat food instead of their diet that should please them.

15 May 2001

Still haven't fitted the cat flap but the weather suits having a hole in the door at the moment and I don't think Thomas is too keen on trying again just yet!

13 & 14 May 2001

Working both days so next entry will be 15 May.

12 May 2001

New (large) Cat Flap bought today, just need to find the time to fit it. Meanwhile they all enjoy the fact they can go in and out through the hole with no effort. Spoilt again lunch-time when I had a friend for lunch, she brought with her fresh tiger prawns, enjoyed by all concerned except Thomas who still can't understand what all the fuss is about, a cat who won't eat prawns, very strange.

11 May 2001

What a racket! Whilst feeding the cats and me breakfast I opened the back door to let some warm fresh air in, I then closed this whilst I went upstairs, both Thomas and Runcie had gone out. The next thing I know, there is an almighty crash. I discovered Thomas at the bottom of the stairs, lying in a twisted position, his tongue hanging out, eyes as big as saucers and totally rigid, the reason? He has the Cat Flap firmly wedged round his stomach! He was terrified! I sat him on my ;ap and gently talked to him stroking him until he relaxed and then eased the Cat Flap over his head. I can only assume he had realised I had gone in, rushed at speed at the Flap, removed it from the door with the force of his entrance and then being on large size couldn't get it past his stomach! I now have a hole in the bottom part of the back door where the Cat Flap should be!

10 May 2001

No difference to yesterday!

9 May 2001

A change in the weather, it has turned hot so instead of sleeping in the house they are now all finding spots in the garden, alternating between sun and shade as the mood takes them.

8 May 2001

Another warm sunny day, we are being spoilt. This afternoon was spent much like the last 2 although this time Patches came visiting and tried to kill Georgie, at least that's what it sounded like, of course he wasn't actually that close to her at all but she does nothing quietly. On returning to the safety of her garden, (she was just on the other side of the fence when she met Patches) she found herself being chased by Thomas, no animosity, but again, what a screeh from Georgie. She has retreated now to the comfort of my bed, on her own!

7 May 2001

I lost Lester a year ago today so it holds quite sad memories, like last year the sun was shining and it was very warm, again spent the afternoon in the garden, the cats are beginning to get used to this weather as am I.

6 May 2001

A Bank Holiday weekend and the sun is shining, whatever next? Spent the day in the garden with all 4 cats. Thomas and Runcie use the gravel path as a bed and spent most of the afternoon following the sun round the garden and warming their tums. Buster and Georgie each found a shady shrub and just for a change, slept.

5 May 2001

I work from home in what used to be my dining room, a room that the cats rarely went in unless there was food on the table and as I only used it when I had guests that wasn't that often. However, now that I want to use the room on a more regular basis they want to be in there all the time despte the fact there is no food on offer. Anyone got any ideas as to how I can discourage them?

4 May 2001

You know that feeling when you are deep asleep and there is nothing on this earth that is going to wake you? Well that was how Thomas was this evening when suddenly someone on the TV sneezed, loudly! Poor Thomas, he shot up in the air about 6 inches off the sofa and landed on floor. He looked totally bemused and was very suspicious of the sofa, in fact, for the rest of the evening he refused to get back on.

3 May 2001

Woke up at 6.30am with the sound of a cat fight. Well initially, they were just swearing (loudly) at each other. A quick reckie had all mine accounted for. At the house opposite there was Patches sitting on the surrounding wall with his back against the house, right in front of him was a black cat with a red collar almost touching noses. The noise was dreadful, then they leapt at each other, almost cuddling as they went up in the air, rotated 180 degrees and landed out of sight in the garden next door. All I could see was black and white fur flying and a terrible racket. A couple of seconds later, nothing, not a sound, and no sign of either cat.

Later that afternoon Patches came to visit. He was warded off by both Thomas and Georgie (separately) but he was limping slightly, I assume he came off the worst.

2 May 2001

Sunshine! Lots of it,we all spent most of the day in the garden, me working the 4 cats chasing hover flies, sunning themselves or sleeping. What a good life.

1 May 2001

Another wet, cold and windy day, when is it going to stop? Thomas is however beginning to find that he still has a bit of kitten in him. He is stopping at the basket of toys quite often these days, Scooping out something, usually a small furry grey mouse and knocking hell out of it all round the house. Buster too has a play, not that you can see him you understand! But, I hear the jingle of the bells inside the play balls in the hall and when I look, the only cat there is him. He is looking totally bemused, his eyes well away from the toy basket and whatever it is that he has got out. Him? Play? Never!
